Don’t be surprised if you are told that oily skin too needs Moisturisation.
Let’s break the myth that oily skin does not need a moisturizer. In fact, oily and acne-prone skin needs more frequent moisturizing efforts in order to prevent excess skin oil secretion.
When one has oily skin, he or she may think that using a moisturizer is the last thing they need. But, skin being the body’s largest organ and the one that is most exposed to environmental conditions, the skin often needs a moisturizer to mitigate the loss of hydration even if it is oily or pimply. People often mistake skin oil for skin hydration. Skin oil is the waxy substance, called sebum that is secreted by the sebaceous glands to help maintain the barrier function of the skin. Skin oil has nothing to do with skin moisturisation. Actually, skin hydration is the process wherein water is absorbed into the layers of the skin, to maintain its plumpness, elasticity, and resiliency.
Although the excessive secretion of skin oil can lead to oily skin and acne, it doesn’t mean that the skin is well-hydrated. Dehydrated skin may even increase the risk of acne breakouts because when the skin becomes excessively dry, the body compensates by producing more skin oil to strengthen the skin’s barrier function. This over-secretion of skin oils often leads to the clogging of the skin pores and the consequent development of more pimples. It is prudent to remember that just because the skin has a lot of oil on it, doesn’t mean that it has a lot of water or it is amply hydrated. Conditions like cold weather, hot baths, and harsh astringents can disrupt the integrity of the skin, leading to the rapid loss of moisture and resulting in skin dryness.
Apifil Oil Free Moisturiser for Oily & Acne-Prone Skin
Many anti-acne therapies have an intense drying effect on the skin. These commonly used anti-acne therapies include topical retinoids like tretinoin and topical antibacterial like benzoyl peroxide. These drugs promote skin dehydration in two distinct ways. While topical retinoids speed up the skin cell turnover, increasing the rate by which skin cells are shed, which in turn, leaves the remaining skin layer dry and flaky, commonly prescribed topical antibiotic – Benzoyl peroxide acts as sebostatic which slows down the sebum production leading to skin dryness.
Unless a moisturizer is used to replace the lost moisture caused by these substances, the skin will not only remain dry and flaky but will also be more vulnerable to itching, cracks, breaks, and infection.
